Is there a variable (similar to $(ProjectDir)) that I can use to get the current word under the cursor? I'd like to define an external tool that launches a web browser with the current word as part of the URL in order to do a search. Does this functionality already exist?

No, currently there is no variable that can be expanded to the word under the caret, please submit a feature request for this
