git error message when opening project

Ran into an issue when opening a project in one of my workspaces.
codelite throws up a dialog with a message "There was a problem while performing a git action"
Dismissing it causes it to go away but it reappears immediately.
I was about to get the behavior to stop by renaming the git.conf
