But, I can't find the keyboard sample online or on the OS I just installed to. Is there something else that needs to be installed?
The ubuntu samples are in a separate package, wx2.8-examples. It installs to /usr/share/doc/wx-examples/
Note that some of the .cpp files (the larger ones) come compressed and need to be extracted before you can build.

Thanks (and I was just asking where the keyboard sample was, but I get it ;) ).

Anyway, I built and ran the keyboard sample and it notices the shift key presses, alone and in combination with others.

I'll just update my OS and also try it (as is, and updated) in a non-virtual environment and post the results here -- either way.
